After returning from the Battle of Siffin, Imam ‘Ali (a) gave certain pieces of advice to one of his sons. Some historians consider him to be Imam Hasan (a) while others are of the opinion that he was Muhammad al-Hanafiyya. He wrote the letter in the form of a will. They deal with almost every aspect of life which goes a long way to make a man successful in life - brave, humane, generous, virtuous and pious. These exhortations are from a father who realizes the morality of life, who is getting old, who has patiently borne reverses and calamities, who hates inordinate desires and has overcome them, and who is shortly going to pass out of this world, to his son who is young, who has the desire of leading the world to sober ways of thinking and better ways of life, a desire which is rather difficult to be achieved. A son, who is mortal and is bound by nature to follow the steps of all mortals, is subject to ailments, is surrounded by misfortunes and calamities, has to face oppressions and tyrannies, has often to confront with and sometimes to tolerate hypocrisy, deceit, guile, duplicity and treason and who is to end his life in death, is to bear sufferings, is the heir to a person who is dead and gone and who finally ended his life as a martyr to the animosity of his enemies. (What a prophecy!) This letter was written nearly 1400 year ago and is applicable and appropriate even nowadays. In the 40th year of Hijri, in the small hours of the morning of 19th Ramadan, Imam ‘Ali (as) was struck with a poisoned sword by the Kharijite Ibn Maljam while offering his prayers in the Masjid of Kufa. He died on the 21st day of Ramadan 40 A.H. and buried in Najaf ul-Ashraf. He was born in the House of Allah, the Kaaba, and martyred in the House of Allah, Masjid al-Kufa. The Lion of Allah, the most brave and gentle Muslim after the Prophet (S) himself, began his glorious life with devotion to Allah and His Messenger, and ended it in the service of Islam.

A Letter from Father to Son, the Last Will of Ali ibn Abi Talib (a)

This is a humble translation for a book that can be considered modern, but the information it contains are of antiquity. This is the book of "2500 adages for imam Ali (puh)." The book might not contain exactly that number of adages but it might be some number around that.

Seeing the usefulness of Sahifa Kamila - the collection of supplications of Imam Zainul Aabedeen (a.s.), our scholars began to compile supplications of other Masoomeen (a.s.). Abdullah bin Saleh Samahiji collected the supplications of Hazrat Amirul Mo-mineen Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.) and named the collection: Sahifa Alawiya. Other scholars also compiled their collections of Duas related from Imam Ali (a.s.) but the collection that became most popular was that of Abdullah bin Saleh. It had 160 Duas. Sahifa Alawiya was first published in 1305 A.H. (1887 A.D.) from Bombay. Then from Majmaul Bahrayn Press, Ludhiana and after this in 1311 A.H. (1893 A.D.) from Tehran. The fourth time it was published from Nizami Press, Lucknow with translation and commentary in 1371 A.H. (1951 A.D.). But it is regretful that it did not mention the sources. The supplications of Sahifa Alawiya can be broadly divided into two sections. The expression of Allah's slaveship and the entreaties of the supplicant. Each of the supplications is a masterpiece of the expression of ones helplessness before the grandeur of the Almighty and only a personality like Ali (a.s.) could have composed such Duas. The present English Version is based on the Urdu translation of Sahifa Alawiya by Maulana Sayyid Murtuza Husain Lakhnavi, republished by Hyderi Kutub Khana. We have tried our best to make the translation conform to original Arabic text, however if the readers find any aberration they are requested to inform us, so that we can make the necessary changes in later editions.

The Richest Treasure by Imam Ali (as) A Selection from Nahjul Balagha:

This text in the form of a letter were written by Hazrat Ali (a.s.) to Malik-e-Ashtar whom he had appointed as governor of Egypt in the year 657 A.D. (approximately). There is a main central idea running throughout this letter, like one single thread out of which a cloth is woven, and that is of Allah. The government is of Allah, the governors and the governed are both creatures of Allah.
This letter is based on the principles of administration as taught by the Holy Quran; a code to establish a kind and benevolent rule, throwing light on various aspects of justice, benevolence and mercy; an order based on the ethics of a benign and pious rulership, where justice and mercy is shown to human beings irrespective of class, creed and color, where poverty is neither a stigma nor a disqualification and where justice is not tarred with nepotism, favoritism, provincialism or religion fanaticism; and on the other hand it is a thesis on the higher values of morality.
It explains what a human administration should be and how it is to be carried out, and it justifies the claims of Muslims that Islam wants to introduce a godly administration of the people, for the people, and by the people, and it wants that ruler should not rule to please himself, but to bring happiness to the ruled, and no religion before Islam tried to achieve this end. Ali should be congratulated for having introduced these principles in his government and for having written them down for posterity.

One day, a heated discussion went on among the Arabs and Muslims during which it was said that there is no alphabet that recurs in speech more often than "aleef" ("A"). All attendants agreed. It was then that the magnificent lantern of language, namely Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (as), stood up and delivered a lengthy sermon. The entire sermon, from beginning to end, did not contain a single word having "Alif".

Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.), known as Imam Ali and Amir al-Mu'minin (13 Rajab 23 AH - 21 Ramadan 40 AH), is the first Imam of all Shia sects, a companion, narrator, scribe of revelation, and the fourth caliph of the Rightly Guided Caliphs among the Sunnis. He is also the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the husband of Hazrat Fatima (pbuh), and the father and grandfather of the eleven Shia Imams. His father was Abu Talib and his mother was Fatima bint Asad. Many virtues have been mentioned for Imam Ali (AS); the Prophet (PBUH) chose him as his successor and successor on the Day of Judgment. Imam Ali (AS) killed a large number of polytheists in the Battle of Badr, protected the life of the Prophet (PBUH) in the Battle of Uhud, ended the war in the Battle of Khandaq by killing Umar bin Abdud, and ended the war in the Battle of Khaybar by breaking down the great gate of the Khaybar fortress.
After performing his only Hajj, the Prophet (PBUH) gathered the people in the area of ​​Ghadir Khum after the revelation of the verse of Tabligh; then he delivered the sermon of Ghadir and raised Imam Ali (AS)'s hand and said, "Whoever I am his master, Ali is also his master. O Allah, love him who loves him and hate his enemy." After that, some companions, such as Umar bin Khattab, congratulated Imam Ali (AS) and addressed him with the title of Amir al-Mu'minin. According to the opinion of Shiite commentators and some Sunnis, the verse of completion was revealed on this day. According to Shiites, the phrase "I am your master" is the verb "mullah" spoken by the Prophet (PBUH) on the Day of Ghadir, meaning to designate the successor of the Prophet (PBUH).
After the death of the Prophet (PBUH), a group in Saqifa pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr as the caliph. Tribal rivalries, grudges, and jealousy have been cited as reasons for opposing the Prophet's (PBUH) order for Ali (PBUH) to succeed him. According to some sources, Ali (PBUH) had a frank debate with Abu Bakr, during which he condemned Abu Bakr for his transgression in the Saqifa incident in ignoring the rights of the Prophet's (PBUH) family. According to Shiite and some Sunni sources, the Caliph's supporters attacked Ali's (PBUH) house to demand allegiance, during which Fatima (PBUH) was injured and her child was miscarried. Shortly after, Fatima (PBUH) was martyred. Ali (AS) has protested the Saqifa incident on various occasions and in numerous speeches and has reminded himself of his right to succeed the Prophet of Islam (PBUH), the most famous of which is the Shaqshaqiyah sermon.
During the 25-year reign of the three caliphs, Imam Ali (AS) was almost absent from political and governmental affairs and was only engaged in scientific and social services, including collecting the Quran, which became known as the Mushaf of Imam Ali (AS), and digging aqueducts. The caliphs also consulted him on various governmental issues such as judgment.

Imam Ali (AS) accepted the caliphate and government at the insistence of the Muslims after the third caliph. During his reign, he attached special importance to justice and opposed the method of the caliphs who divided the treasury based on the records of individuals. He ordered that Arabs and non-Arabs and every Muslim of any tribe and lineage would have the same share in the treasury and returned all the lands that Uthman had given to different individuals to the treasury. During the short period of Imam Ali's (AS) rule, three heavy civil wars took place: Jamal, Siffin and Nahrawan.
Imam Ali (AS) was finally martyred in the mihrab of the Kufa mosque while praying by a Kharijite named Ibn Muljam Muradi and was secretly buried in Najaf. His shrine is one of the holy places in Shiite culture and its pilgrimage is considered important.
The origins of many Muslim sciences, including Arabic grammar, theology, jurisprudence, and interpretation, have been attributed to Imam Ali (AS), and various sects of Sufism trace their chain of transmission to him. Ali ibn Abi Talib has always had a special status and status among the Shiites, and has been the best, most pious, and most learned of all men after the Prophet (PBUH) and the rightful successor of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Accordingly, a group of companions have been considered followers and friends of Ali (AS), i.e. Shiites, since the lifetime of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH). The famous book Nahjul Balagha is a selection of the speeches, letters, wisdom, and sermons of Imam Ali (AS).
